Rick,
First, I would like to let you know I enjoyed the
web site. Being a part of the old XL era I got a real kick out of it! I
was glad to hear you were interested in our old XR125 story.
Tonight I'm sending you pictures of the bike when
it was re-born in 1977 as a XR, and I was a 21 year old kid with too many
ideas. I have a few more pictures of it before we got it dirty, but I
picked out the best ones. I will go through the pictures of it as a XL in
1976 and XR in 1977 out in I.S.D.T. events, and send you the best ones. I
will make up a list of all the mods. also. I have event results to if you
are interested, Bad Rock in Weston OR 1976, Trask Mountain in McMinville
OR 1977, and Rattlesnake in Olympia WA 1977.
The bike is a 74/75 Honda XL125. The rear linkage
set up was for a 76 CR125 and was made by an outfit out of Florida called
Skunk Works. I adapted it to the XL. Front forks are off a 76 CR125. The
engine I filled with parts from Powroll. It was 150cc.
We had more fun with this project than you can
believe! There was nothing like the look on 2- stroke riders face when he
got passed by a Modified XL125. Cliff was the one that really left his
mark. At Olympia in one of the timed special test sections he tied for the
fastest time in the 125 class and tied with Ted Leimbach riding a Penton.
At Trask he finished fourth out of nineteen entries. Ten riders were
I.S.D.T. riders and he finished ahead of seven of them. That was or best
moment in the whole project!
We now have a new project after many years, also
with a Honda XR. We are rebuilding and modifing a 1981, 1982, and 1988
Honda XR200R. Engine full of Powroll parts. Custom rear shocks by Works.
Late style forks and hubs on the 81 and 82. Excel rims with stainless
spokes. Etc. Etc.
Our first event, the
1976 Bad Rock ISDT Qualifier
Our second event, the 1977 Trask ISDT Qualifier
And finally, the 1977 Rattlesnake IDST
Qualifier
